so do you play goal ball? Blind football (soccer) or baseball? Looking to get to know others who enjoy playing blind sports, especially those in the Chicago area. I'm really into blind football, but unfortunately its not very popular in the US yet (or maybe ever)...
I'm a rookie goalball player. The provincial team is really short of players, so I hope to continue as I keep improving.
Ciao,
Kate
i've played both goalball and football in my time, and was pretty good at both of them, if i say so myself. i am originally from england though plan to be spending a lot of time in illinois from now on due to the fact that i'm going out with shea AKA angel77 on here. we're based in pekin near peoria though which is a good 2 and a half hour drive from chicago. it's also an average 3 hour drive and a freaking dreadful 4 and 3 quarter hour drive but that's another story! lol. perhaps when i'm more settled here though we could organize some sort of get together for a few games of goalball and football. that would definitely be cool.
why is it in the age of blind people wanting better integration and acceptance in the world that they continue to play a game designed for, and played only by the visually impaired? never seen the atraction of such things. lets stick to adapted mainstream games, maybe we can be admired then for our abilities.
Generally, I'd agree... I do know sighted folks who play goalball... I enjoy playing it myself, not because it's a blind sport, but because I enjoy it, period
why do gay people choose to go to the same bars as each other? why do startrek fans choose to go to the same conventions as each other? the answer is simple. yes of course we want integration but the fact is that we are still far more likely to find common ground with other blind people than we are with non-visually impaired people. just because we choose to play goalball doesn't automatically mean that we don't wish to mix with anybody else, it doesn't mean that we want to exclude everybody else from our world, it is just an activity that everybody can do which you can also base a social event around. i see nothing wrong with that.
i happen to really enjoy playing goalball and just because it isn't a main stream sport that has been adapted doesn't seem like a good reason to stop playing it for me.
I assume you are talking about real football and not American nfl football. I played, briefly, on a blind and visually impaired football team in the UK. Got hurt a few times but it comes with the territory. I liked goal ball but don't play anymore. I'd rather sail or ski etc.
I play goalball that's about it. I'm not that good, but I enjoy the sport.
I looooooove goalball! I used to play in highschool, but after I graduated, I didn't have a team and anywhere to practice. I checked into the beepball league, but the closest team is, I think, in pa, and I'm in baltimore. I didn't know there was blind football, but I'd like to find out if there's any blind sports in my area. Jen
I'd love to know if there are any blind sports in my area too. Not the most athletic of guys but there has to be something I can do. Did try archery once, and would do that again. Goalball sounds interesting, although not sure how feasible that'd be. Cheers, tl
I've played very little goalball. My adaptive phys Ed. teacher wanted to try it out with some of the cognatively disabled kids in my school. I think they got the hang of it, sort of. My friend, loraine, didn't like being blindfolded.
I have played goal ball, and I had fun doing it. I played it in two thousand three, when I was ar a program for the blind in my stare. It was awesome when I played it. I would love to play again some time.
I play Goalball and love it. We don't really have a team right now, but some people in our area set up a thing where blind people and sighted friends can show up on Saturdays and play. So it's really unorganized and not really a team, but fun.
I've done archery once - that was fun! The only thing I didn't like about it was how much I had to depend on a sighted person to help me aim and whatnot. I mean, I could have aimed in the right general direction, but I doubt I could have actually hit the target without her help. Other than that though, archery was really cool.
I've skied a couple times - once with some blind school classmates, and once with my family and a friend. It's fun, but I'm not one for racing down hills, not being able to see where I'm going, with the only directions being the ones from my guide. (When the guide himself is sort of directionally challenged, that can be a little bit scary.)

I used to play goalball a lot in High School, but after I graduated I sort of drifted away from it. And I don't know if Idaho really has a goalball team.
More blind people should play NFL style football in middle and high school, it's a lot of fun.
I've never liked football.
I'm wondering if there is any blind baseball team in the Nyc area. How exactly is baseball played with blind people?? I love the sport, and would definitely love to get into it!!!!!
There is. The Long Island Bombers have been around for years and are always looking for new players. Here's their website, which also contains an explanation of how beep baseball works.

I've played goalball for about three years now, I'm on the Philadelphia women's team.
Sweet, HMG... did you play at Nationals this year?
Let's see. It's been about eight years for me.
Yes, I did play at Nationals and my team took third place for the Women, so we're ranked third in the nation.
Congratulations! :) I followed the games on the Audio network
